It really was a long time ago that “Star Wars” came out! Way back in 1977. To celebrate the golden anniversary and the start of one of the biggest IPs in history, Lucasfilm will be releasing a restored version of the 1977 cut of the film to theaters in 2027!
Fans can celebrate a bit earlier than the actual 50th anniversary on February 19, 2027. The actual release date for the original film was May 25, 1977.
The theatrical release will be just part of the yearlong 50th anniversary celebration for the franchise.
More information about the celebration and film release will come later.
“Star Wars” launched one of the most beloved IPs of all time.
I can’t stress enough how influential and beloved the original trilogy is. So much so that, according to a ranking by Empire Magazine, “The Empire Strikes Back” is the greatest movie of all time as voted on by 250k fans.
“Star Wars” changed so many things. It gave hope in a period of time where darker themes reigned in theaters.
George Lucas’ toy deal with Kenner broke the mold and made bank at a time when toy companies didn’t think these kinds of toy tie-ins would work. It changed the entire pop culture landscape for toy tie-ins.
The films are beloved by entire generations of fans.
While I frankly do not like the Disney sequel trilogy, I do love the original trilogy. I would be thrilled to see it theaters again.
