Spaceballs 2 Is In Development At Amazon With Mel Brooks & Josh Gad

In an age when multiple classic movies that don’t need sequels are getting sequels, the latest film to get this treatment is the 1987 Star Wars parody Spaceballs. The original film was directed, produced, and co-written by comedy legend Mel Brooks (who also acted in it). Brooks will once again act as producer, with actor/comedian Josh Gad set to star and co-produce, and co-write the film for Amazon/MGM.

While the film is in early development and the plot is being kept under wraps, we can only imagine what we might see. The first Spaceballs film primarily parodied the original Star Wars trilogy with a few references to Alien, Star Trek, and Planet of the Apes. But with multiple new sci-fi franchises like Avatar becoming popular, you never know what they might do next. Not to mention all the new Star Wars movies since then.

Unfortunately, a decent amount of the film’s original cast, such as John Candy, Joan Rivers, Dick Van Patten, and Dom DeLuise, has since passed away. Rick Moranis, who portrayed the villain Dark Helmet, has since retired from acting. Who or how this sequel will be connected to the original is unknown.

While speculation of a sequel can be traced back to the throwaway joke in the original film “Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money,” there were apparently talks of doing a follow-up around the time of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

Since Spaceballs, Mel Brooks has developed a sequel to History of the World: Part 1 with History of the World: Part 2 for Disney/Hulu, so his wanting to revisit one of his most popular projects might have been on his mind. However, being shy of 98 years old, it isn’t known how involved he will be. Had he been able to make the sequel with Disney, perhaps we may finally have been able to get some official Spaceballs merchandise

What do you think? Do we really need a Spaceballs 2 after all of these years? Or was just one good enough? Let us know your thoughts.
