Snow White

Snow White To Likely Open Far Worse Than Anticipated, Beaten By “The Marvels”

I have been saying that Disney’s newest live-action remake, “Snow White” was likely going to come in below “The Marvels” global total. Now, early reports indicate the film is coming in significantly below Disney’s biggest bomb in recent years.

What is the estimated opening weekend box office?

According to Deadline, “Snow White” will earn around $43 million domestically and only $87.3 million globally. “The Marvels” opened to $46.1 million domestically and $110.3 million globally.  If this trend continues it could be very bad as “The Marvels” only made $84.5 million domestically and $206.1 million globally.

This isn’t the only similarity between the two films. “The Marvels” had a production budget of $270 million (before marketing), which is about the same estimated budget as “Snow White.” Marvel’s film started out farther ahead of “Snow White” and still lost $237 million for Disney. Which makes me wonder how much the Rachel Zegler-led film will lose overall.

“The Marvels” was only left in theaters for four weeks until Disney pulled it.

“Snow White” is also below “Dumbo”

One of Disney’s disappointments of 2019 was the live-action “Dumbo” film which opened to $45.9 million, possibly more than “Snow White.” Globally, the film earned $119.5 million, which is significantly above the Disney Princess film’s projected total. “Dumbo” likely lost Disney about $150 million, possibly more.

Disney is spending a lot of money promoting “Snow White”

Going by the amount of sponsored advertisements on social media, commercials on streaming services, and other platforms, Disney is spending a lot of money promoting this film. It was likely a desperate attempt to save what they knew was a bomb. At this point, they are just throwing money away.

The more they keep spending the greater their loss will be.

Currently, the film sits at 44% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Audience score is at 74%, which frankly seems high.

Metacritic has a 50 score for critical and a 1.3 score for audience.

More importantly, the Cinemascore for Snow White is only a B+, which sounds great until you realize that “Dumbo” had an A- score. “The Marvels” had a B, yet still beat “Snow White.”

What is the takeaway?

Disney needs to do a few things moving forward.

  1. People are getting tired of poor live-action remakes. Meanwhile the excitement for “Lilo and Stitch” is high.
  2. Creepy CGI does not bring in viewers. The dwarfs are nightmare fuel when compared to Stitch.
  3. They need to walk back the politicizing of their films and tell their actors to stop talking.
  4. Disney needs to realize when something isn’t working they should quit while they are ahead and maybe not mess with Walt’s legacy.
  5. Not everything needs a reimagining for modern audiences.

Maybe it will surprise us and do well next week, but as soon as “Minecraft” releases on April 4, “Snow White” is toast.
