“Snow White” opened for previews last Thursday, March 21, and it underperformed during it’s opening weekend. But it seems it performed even worse than what the media reported!
How bad did it do?
The media seemingly rounded up some numbers.
Domestically, the film made $42.2 million, not $43 million. Ahead of the release, the lowest estimates were $45 million, and it came in below those.
Globally, the film made $86.1 million instead of the $87.3 million previously reported.
What does this mean?
This means that the film made $1.2 million less than reported. While not a big difference, it still means that “Snow White” is even further from the “break-even” point than previously reported.
The “Snow White” film has an estimated budget of $270 million before marketing and theater cuts. I feel the budget could even be higher than the estimated pre-marketing costs. Going by the usual estimation methods, the film needs to make about $550-$600 million to break even. It hasn’t even made $100 million yet.
Can it pick up at the box office?
The second weekend isn’t looking great. Screenrant indicates that the “best case scenario” is $50 million globally, and “at most” $250 million total for the film.
This is $300 million below the low-end estimate of break-even for Disney.
“Snow White” only has about a week left before “Minecraft” opens on April 4. Kids will likely choose the Minecraft mines over the dwarf ones. So I do not foresee a long tail like “Mufassa: The Lion King” or “Elemental” had.
General audiences rejected the film.
The media and fans are quick to blame “racists” or the “anti-woke” for the film’s failure, but the issue is that the majority, the general audience, did not come out for it. Many say they don’t want to see it or are waiting for Disney+.
While the film could still make money from merchandise sales and Disney+ subscriptions, it isn’t looking good.
Here is my review of the film. I gave it a 5-5.5 out of 10.
