Snow White Made 3.5 Million Previews, Almost 1/2 “The Marvels” Totals

“Snow White” was released to theaters for previews yesterday, March 20. Those numbers are in and they show a rocky start to the live-action Disney Princess film.

According to Deadline “Snow White” debuted at only $3.5 million domestically. In comparison, Disney’s biggest box office bomb of 2023, “The Marvels” did $6.6 million in previews. That film went on to only do $60 million domestically and $80 million globally on the first weekend. It was later pulled from theaters after only four weeks and $218 million in total.

“Disney’s Dumbo,” which is the closest live-action Disney film to the projected box office of “Snow White,” did $2.6 million in previews, but opened to $45.9 million its first weekend.

Current estimates indicate that “Snow White” will make between $45-$55 million domestically and may make $100 million globally. This puts it behind “The Marvels” and unless it does $117 million globally, it will also be behind “Dumbo.”  Even “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” earned about $150 million globally on its opening weekend.

This is not a win.

Disney is now changing tactics

Disney has constant “Snow White” promotional ads on social media. Now they are calling it “The most talked about movie of the year…”

This is not exactly a win, but they are spinning it hard.

The reviews are not helping!

Right now “Snow White” has a 45% on Rotten Tomatoes. Metacritic is at 50, with the audience score at 1.1.

There is yet to be an audience score from Rotten Tomatoes, but that will likely come later tonight or tomorrow. With so many people trying to artificially raise or lower the score, I think it will balance out at some point.

I saw the film and I rated it close to the critics at a 5 or 5.5  / 10. It was mid. Not the worst film by any means, but not the best one either.

Maybe audiences will support the film?

The film’s real trial begins today with the official opening of “Snow White” into 4,200 theaters nationwide.

According to Deadline children (mostly girls) are loving the film, while parents are coming in about where I did on the scores. Maybe families will flock to the film and raise it up?

We will know more in a day or two.
