“Snow White” is a box office failure and the focus of many stories (on here too), but I have found a story that links the film to environmental destruction. No, I am not kidding. It isn’t dwarf farts either. According to The Guardian, “Snow White” filming generated 62% more carbon emissions than average.
How do they know this?
Since the filming was done in Pinewood Studios near London, UK, Disney had to file a report on emissions generated. They must do this to qualify for the up to 25.5% reimbursement from the government.
It was filmed on location, so the higher numbers are attributed to the use of portable generators and fuel. However, The Guardian does acknowledge that Disney used battery generators as well.
How much is normally generated by a tentpole film, and how much did Snow White generate?
The impact is measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide, with a normal tentpole film generating about 2,600 tCO2e. (tonnes Carbon Dioxide emission.)
“Snow White” generated 3,153 tonnes of carbon dioxide, about 550 tonnes more than average.
This isn’t too terrible when compared to Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” which generated about 5,127 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions-about two times the average.
When combined, both live-action films generated 8,279.6 tonnes, which The Guardian points out is more than the 7,829 tonnes Birmingham airport produced in 2023-24!
It’s okay, though. Disney used some renewable energy via Pinewood Studios, rented electric cars, and only used “charter flights for full crew moving, which they claim is better for the environment than commercial flights.
And….
It’s such a weird and oddly specific point to harp on over the film. I thought it was so funny that I had to mention it.
This is how far the media has gone to find reasons to hate the “Snow White” film.
Not to mention that the Walt Disney Company talks about their conservation efforts, while generating more emissions in two films than a major airport does in a year. That is with efforts to mitigate carbon emissions.
The movie doesn’t just suck, it now blows ….carbon emissions.
