“Snow White” has completely failed at the box office. The film initially opened to only $42.2 million domestically. In its second weekend, it fell further than any other Disney live-action remake, dropping 66% for a $14.3 million take. This weekend, it is estimated to hit only $5.7 million. All of this has reportedly led to the cancellation of the live-action “Tangled” film.
Why is “Snow White” failing this weekend?
“Snow White” has faced many controversies, including the backlash over the CGI dwarfs instead of hiring dwarf actors, the lack of interest in more Disney live-action remakes, and the comments and behavior of the lead actress, Rachel Zegler. This likely led to the low box office take. Now “A Minecraft Movie” has been released, and audiences are flocking to see it.

The Minecraft film may do better in one weekend than “Snow White” has done in three weeks.
Currently, “Snow White” has made about $71.4 million domestically, and $75.8 million overseas, giving it an estimated global total of about $147.2 million. “A Minecraft Movie” may hit $130 million+ domestic in its first weekend, and $90+ million internationally. Just the domestic estimate is almost as much as “Snow White” has made in total after three weeks. Meanwhile, “The Marvels,” which is widely recognized as a huge flop, performed better with $206 million before it left theaters.
The film’s failure has had repercussions on other Disney projects.
It is now being reported that the live-action version of “Tangled” has been cancelled due to the failure of “Snow White.”
The popular Rapunzel story was set to be in development with Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) set to direct. Now the pre-production has halted as Disney re-evaluates the live-action slate. Frankly, there are some more that should be cancelled as well, but they might wait and see how “Lilo and Stitch” does. I think it will do well, and Disney will think it means they should keep pushing live-action remakes out.
I wouldn’t recommend it. People are over it.
This weekend, “A Minecraft Movie” is knocking “Snow White” out and not a poisoned “sleep of death” apple.
