Nearly five years after the release of The Rise of Skywalker the Star Wars franchise has been frozen in carbonite in terms of theatrical releases. Under Disney’s leadership the series has had a very mixed reception. It started off strong with The Force Awakens and Rogue One, then taking a nosedive with The Last Jedi and Solo. Since then, the series has mainly focused on books, comics, video games and television.
The first major Star Wars television series was The Mandalorian which, alongside Marvel’s Loki, helped make Disney+ a household name in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. The series was so popular that it would go on to have multiple seasons and even spin-offs. Granted the later productions weren’t as popular as the earlier ones, the characters of Din Djarin and Grogu became instantly popular within the fandom.
With Star Wars returning to theaters, Disney is playing it safe by having their big theatrical return be based on these familiar characters in The Mandalorian & Grogu. The film will effectively serve as a replacement for a fourth season of the show.
Now, while certain plot points of the film haven’t been shared as of yet, we are getting updates on the film’s casting. Sigourney Weaver, best known for her roles in science fiction franchises such as Alien and Avatar, has confirmed that she will be have a role in the incoming Star Wars spin-off in an interview via Deadline. She said:
“I’m playing a role in The Mandalorian & Grogu. I got to meet Grogu for the first time the other day. I’m filming that before I go to London for ‘The Tempest’ at the end of the year.“![]()
In that same interview, the actress also confirmed that she will be appearing in Avatar 4 & 5. Her character, Kiri, was hinted at having significant importance in future films. Her reappearing in the next three movies cements her importance.
What do you think? Will The Mandalorian & Grogu help bring audiences back to the big screen? Or has any hope of the franchise’s big return been lost to the dark side? Let us know your thoughts.
