Shrek 5 Is Pushed Back Till 2027

Recent reports indicate that Universal and DreamWorks Animation have postponed the upcoming “Shrek 5” film by about six months. Fans have already waited 15 years for a new film, but they will need to wait a bit longer.

In a report from Variety, the film has been pushed back from December 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027, replacing an “untitled event film” that was originally in that time slot. The “untitled event film” has been moved up to an April 16, 2027, release date.

Why did Universal move it back?

We don’t know. They never gave a reason for the change, but it could be due to production delays or the potential competition from “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Ice Age 6”. Both films are currently slated for release on December 18, 2026.

Fans weren’t thrilled with the updated animation style and jokes shown in the teaser from February. With many complaining about how Donkey looked, including Donkey from Universal Orlando.

Donkey told a family who came to his meet and greet,

“Did you guys watch the new Shrek trailer? I’m just saying. I look rough. Donkey looks homeless. That’s why you always get final approval of all your film and movie rights.

Variety indicated that DreamWorks films tend to do better in the summer citing the  “Despicable Me” franchise, How To Train Your Dragon,” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” as examples.

We don’t know why the film has been moved, but any of these reasons could be why.

This is the second release date shift for “Shrek 5.”

Initially, the film was to release in July of 2026, but it was pushed back five months to December. Now it’s been moved again, making it about a year later than originally planned.

The new release date puts the film a week behind “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.”

Is the original cast returning for “Shrek 5”

Yes. Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) are all set to return for the film. Now Zendaya will be joining them as their daughter.

Personally, I am hoping the delay is due to them fixing the awful look of the teaser trailer. It was cringe and, while I understand they were trying to age up the characters, it needs some work.
