SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP have reached a tentative deal to end the 118-day strike in Hollywood. The strike officially ended at 12:01 AM PST on November 9. The actors’ 17-member negotiating committee all voted to recommend a “tentative agreement” to the SAG-AFTRA board.
The details of the agreement have not yet been revealed. That is likely going to come on Friday.
Likely, an agreement was reached with the AMPTP studios on AI usage, which became the new hold-up after SAG-AFTRA’s negotiators demanded a .59-$1 levy on all streaming subscribers, and AMPTP declined. It is unclear if that levy is part of the deal as well. So far, the guild has already been presented with offers that contain big gains for eligible members in residuals, base pay, and even health care. Some groups, like stunt coordinators, will finally be given residuals.
If the board agrees to the tentative deal, the eligible SAG-AFTRA members will be able to vote to ratify the agreement soon. Hopefully, this gets people back to work, and everything can move forward again.
During the strike, a lot of below-the-line (BTL) workers and other businesses and jobs in Hollywood were also at a standstill. Many people outside the SAF-AFTRA union were also out of work over the strikes. I want to make sure to acknowledge those individuals who have also lost a lot for the 118-day strike, even if they didn’t get a choice in it. They too, will get to return to work and start digging out of the financial damage and debt from months without work, along with a lot of the SAG-AFTRA members who aren’t the big celebrities that have a lot of money to hold them over.
Hopefully, they get this taken care of quickly and get everything moving again.
