It can’t be said enough how popular the 2001 DreamWorks animated film Shrek is. The film was a cultural phenomenon that shook the animation industry the its core. An entire generation of individuals grew up on that film and remember it fondly though internet memes and fan works.
The film not only made DreamWorks a household name alongside studios like Disney and Pixar, but became a multi-billion dollar franchise with its four sequels and spin-off series Puss in Boots which currently has two installments. It is currently the second highest grossing animated film franchise second only to Despicable Me. And don’t even get started on the merchandise aspect.
The last mainline film in the series, Shrek: Forever After (Also known as The Final Chapter) released in 2010 and there has been no sign of a new film until the recent success of the Puss in Boots films. Now it appears that not only we are getting a Shrek 5, but we may know when it will be coming out.
A recent report has been spreading online about how a Universal employee/intern accidentally listed Shrek 5 in their list of credentials on their Linkedin page and that it currently has a 2025 release date. The post has since been deleted from their account. Universal has made no comment to announcement since the supposed leak.
While no synopsis has been given for a possible fifth film in the series the ending of 2022’s Puss in Boots: the Last Wish showed that puss, along with his love interest Kitty Softpaws and their friend Perrito the therapy dog are seen sailing a boat towards Far Far Away, the kingdom first introduced in Shrek 2. 
It is unknown when in the timeline this is though since in Forever After Shrek and Fiona are seen living in their swamp hut with their three children. It is also unknown how much of the original cast would return. While Michel Myers has show interest in returning we don’t know if Eddie Murphy or any of the other cast will be open to it.
