RUMOR: Kathleen Kennedy To Have Her Lucasfilm Contract Renewed

ATTENTION, THE FOLLOWING STORY IS A RUMOR, SO PLEASE TAKE THE FOLLOWING RPEORT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.

With the recent changes at Lucasfilm, and Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni seemingly taking control of the studio while Kathleen Kennedy is rumored to have less and less control over Lucasfilm. Many have speculated that since her contract is set to expire by the end of the year, perhaps it wouldn’t be renewed. But as many fans have become interested in Star Wars again and a number of upcoming projects like the Kenobi series, The Ahsoka Series and Season 3 of The Mandalorian being worked on, perhaps with George Lucas’ involvement, it many now appear that Kennedy might get a reprieve.

A number of outlets have reported on a rumor by a “source” named Mike Sutton, saying that Kathleen Kennedy will have her contract as President of Lucasfilm renewed. The source claims that Disney CEO, Bob Chapek, is impressed with the amount of money the films made and that is one of the reasons why they are renewing her contract.

Sutton states:

It’s not like Kathleen wrote or directed any of those films. In Disney’s minds, they brought in billions to their bank accounts. Disney doesn’t want to lose Kathleen.

He went on to say that Chapek and former CEO, Bob Iger, were impressed with her ability to make Star Wars a more “Diverse and Inclusive” franchise. Kathleen Kennedy will seemingly only leave Lucasfilm when she desires. Even in the Disney Q3 Earnings Call to Investors, Chapek did state that they planned to work with Kennedy for years to come.

These statements do however raise some questions, because despite the Disney Trilogy (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker) films each passing the billion dollar mark, the films progressively earned less and less, and opened with less favorable reviews. Solo was even a box office bomb and the company potentially lost money on The Rise of Skywalker due to the constant reshoots and re-writes.

This story is perhaps Kennedy is attempting one last chance of getting her contract renewed as she sees the writing on the wall. This Rumor conflicts with various other reports indicating that both Bob Chapek and Bob Iger were angry with Kennedy over the Leslye Headland hiring. Disney’s worst enemy is bad press, and if places like The Atlantic are calling her out it seems unlikely this rumor is true. Disney already has enough bad press right now with the Black Widow Lawsuit.

My take on the Rumor? I’ll just say I’ll believe it when I see it if Kennedy does indeed get her contract renewed.
