Universal’s push to revive its brand of classic horror movie monsters is slowly gaining momentum. After the disappointment that was the 2017 remake of The Mummy, Universal decided to go in a different direction with the 2020 remake of The Invisible Man. Universal partnered with horror movie studio Blumhouse Productions, known for the Paranormal Activity franchise. This tactic played out well, with the film making $144.5 million on a $7 million budget.
With one of Universal’s new lands at their upcoming Epic Universe theme park being themed after their classic monsters, you can bet that they are attempting to reinvigorate these characters on the big screen.
In addition to Blumhouse’s current work on a remake of The Wolfman for 2025, Universal is apparently working with them on another remake, and this time, they are bringing the big guns.
In 2024 Blumhouse acquired Atomic Monster, the studio behind the Conjuring franchise. With that purchase brought the company’s founder, James Wan. It is now being reported that through this business venture James Wan is in talks to direct a remake of the 1954 classic The Creature From The Black Lagoon.
The original film follows explorers of the South American Amazon jungles. In it, they find the fossil of a possible link between land and sea animals. But they find more than what they bargained for, as in the unexplored part of the swamp land dwells a creature of unimaginable horror, a creature who is half man, half fish.
James Wan directed the 2018 DC Comics movie Aquaman. In the film, there was a section that featured human/fish hybrid monsters that dwelled in a deep dark part of the ocean. A horror spin-off titled The Trench was said to be in development but ultimately it was scrapped. If these reports are true, Wan can finally have his fish-man monster movie.
Whenever the case, this shows that Universal is betting big on reviving their classic monsters. Does this mean they will try doing a cinematic universe again? Only time will tell.
