When Disney launched its Disney+ streaming platform, one of the key brands for content was Star Wars. The series The Mandalorian, which took place after Return of the Jedi, was an instant success. This prompted Disney and Lucasfilm to green-light more series set in that universe. Some spun off from The Mandalorian, such as Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett, while others took place before A New Hope, such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor.
However, after many of those shows generated a rather “mixed” reception from fans and critics, things came to a head after the recent cancelation of The Acolyte, a series set during the High Republic era.
The feedback from audiences was so poor and viewership was so low that the series was scrapped after one season despite plans for multiple. It is considered one of the lowest rated pieces of Star Wars television in history.
Following the show’s cancelation, a new report from insider Daniel Richtman aka DanielRPK claims that Disney will be slowing down their output of Star Wars original content for Disney+. He states:
“I’m hearing that several series are in development, but it seems they plan to release only one live-action series per year starting in 2025.“
Lucasfilm does currently have multiple theatrical films in development, one of them being The Mandalorian & Grogu, seemingly serving as a replacement for a fourth season of the show. The era of people being glued to streaming shows due to the COVID-19 pandemic is over. Disney has had a few box office hits this year, indicating that theaters may still be a viable market, if they make movies audiences want to see that is.
Star Wars‘ future on television might not be as big as it once was a couple years ago. If Lucasfilm wants to keep people’s eyes glued to their TVs then they will have to do some rethinking of their output.
What do you think? Is it better that Disney is lessening their output of Star Wars content? Will this help improve the quality of the shows? Let us know your thoughts.
