The upcoming Rey Palpatine film has been the subject of much controversy ever since it was announced. Not only was the project a continuation of Disney’s very divisive Star Wars sequel trilogy but also due to the film’s choice of director.
Last year, it was announced that documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy would direct the film. However, this decision became the subject of controversy after a few comments made by the filmmaker were uncovered.
At the 2015 Women of the World summit, she was asked how she was acting as a force of change in the industry. She responded with:
“I like to make men uncomfortable. I enjoy making men uncomfortable. It is important to be able to look into the eyes of a man and say, ‘I am here’ and recognize that. And recognize that I am working to bring something that makes you uncomfortable, and it should make you uncomfortable because you need to change your attitude.“
“And it’s only when you’re uncomfortable, when you are shifty, when you have to have difficult conversations that you will perhaps look at yourself in the mirror and not like the reflection and then say, maybe there is something wrong with the way I think or maybe there is something wrong with the way I am addressing this issue.“
These comments became a turn-off to a large portion of the fanbase, which is primarily male. Many have grown tired of Disney’s trend of hiring people who use the franchise to push talking points. The recent show The Acolyte is a good example of this.
In a recent interview with Variety, Obaid-Chinoy addressed the criticisms made towards the project and explained that she is effectively “drowning them out.”
“The greatest thing about ‘Star Wars’ is that everyone has a personal connection to it. Everyone is passionate about it. And throughout the fandom, people have clear ideas about who should direct or what the stories should be about. I’m just drowning out those voices until I’m done.”
Nonetheless, the film is seemingly on hold as it has been pushed back in favor of a film based on The Mandalorian. We don’t know what to expect from this production’s future or if it will even move forward after a certain amount of time.
What do you think? Will the Rey movie eventually see the light of day? Is Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy justified in ignoring the criticisms? Let us know your thoughts.
