The media is saying that the latest Disney/Pixar film, “Hoppers,” is going to hit $88 million globally for its opening weekend. Reports indicate that $46 million of that is from the domestic box office.
This is the largest opening for an original Pixar film since “Coco,” (not adjusting for inflation). With inflation, “Coco” still bests “Hoppers”.
While the film performed a bit better than global expectations, it still has a long way to go for profitability.
The budget for “Hoppers” is estimated to be around $150 million, which means it needs to make between $300 -$375 million to break even. Normally, that might not be an issue, but time will be limited with “Super Mario Galaxy” looming on the horizon.
“Hoppers” needs to either perform better next weekend or Disney needs to keep it in theaters for a long time and hope word of mouth brings enough people in to hit profitability, as they did with “Elemental.”
What is Hoppers about?
“Animal-lover Mabel seizes an opportunity to use a new technology to “hop” her consciousness into a lifelike robotic beaver and communicate directly with animals. As she uncovers mysteries in the animal world beyond anything she could have imagined, Mabel must rally the entire animal kingdom to face a major imminent human-threat.”
Here is the trailer,
“Hoppers” was directed by Daniel Chong and produced by Nicole Paradis Grindle. Mark Mothersbaugh scored the film.
I will give a parental warning that there is a scene where a parent is “smooshed” in front of their child. Some kids might get upset by that.
Rotten Tomatoes has audiences and critics in rare lockstep, with both groups giving it a 94%.
I wouldn’t rate it quite that high. I gave it a 6.5 -7 / 10.

What do you think? Will this film break even? Do you think it can hold it’s own against the “Super Mario Galaxy” film?
