In the original “Star Wars” films, Peter Mayhew was Chewbacca. He was very tall and wore the costume, and most fans know that, but what many might not know is that Mayhew apparently voiced Chewbacca’s lines before the actual Chewie voice was added.
Now a video has surfaced from filming during the Hoth hangar scene in “The Empire Strikes Back” and we hear Han (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) giving the lines. The results are hilarious.
Here is the video,
Peter Mayhew starts speaking about 19-20 seconds in.
When filming the og STAR WARS trilogy, Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) would really speak to Harrison Ford in the scenes – so when Solo is reacting, he’s reacting to actual dialogue and not just wookie sounds.
This is *hilarious* I’m gonna need an entirely new Special Edition. pic.twitter.com/L3uop9eyig— Todd Spence (@Todd_Spence) January 20, 2026
Now, fans want to see even more of Peter Mayhew giving Chewbacca’s dialogue.
they should make that specific edition, would love it :]

That’s hilarious. I want the whole trilogy of Chewiw being a grumpy old bugger.

Chewy in a human voice sounding like an English pub bloke is everything!

Just hearing him yelling at Han is hilarious.
Now I want a Mayhew cut of all three movies. 🤣— Stormfang_arts (@Stormfang7567) January 20, 2026
Wait, we could have had subtitles this whole time??

I would have loved Chewbacca with a mildly irritable Skouse accent lol

I doubt a cut of this would ever happen, but one can dream.
