Pay Difference Between Men and Women On The Acolyte Show Disney’s Force Still Favors Men

While the recent Disney+ “Star Wars” show “The Acolyte” seems to be mostly about women and diversity, the pay scales off-screen are still favoring men.

In a recent Forbes article by Caroline Reid, it was disclosed that male employees working on the show were seemingly paid better than female employees.

Reid states that filings from April 2023 show that when the production was in “full swing,” there were almost 700 employees working on “The Acolyte.” Of those employees, only 30% identified as female, and their hourly pay was 19.4% lower than that of male employees.

According to the filings, in early April last year, when production of the streaming series was still in full swing, just 30% of the 695 employees were female. Across the entire workforce, women’s average hourly pay was 19.4% lower than men’s.

Because the show was filmed in the UK and had more than 250 employees, Lucasfilm was required by the UK government to disclose the pay difference between men and women.

According to filing, not only were women paid less than men, but 53% of the highest-paid hourly employees were male.

“Not only does this show that the average hourly pay of the women who worked on The Acolyte was 19.4% less than men received but it was also 13.5% lower when taking the middle number if hourly pay is ranked from highest to lowest. What’s more, although men outnumber women in the bottom and two middle hourly pay bands, 53% of the employees in the highest hourly pay band were also male.”
Of course, we don’t know the breakdown of all the jobs mentioned. Some jobs pay more because they use more specialized skills, and there may simply not be as many women available to hire. This could be why 3% more men than women were paid more in the upper levels.
It is ironic, given that Disney has leveraged “equality” and “diversity” for this new show. So much so that not liking the show often gets fans labeled “bigots.” But Disney themselves are seemingly not paying their female workers as much as the male ones if this article is correct.
Lucasfilm and Disney keep pushing for the idea that women are the future of Star Wars. Maybe it’s because it’s cheaper?
