Paramount Pictures has officially dated two major franchise films for late 2028, giving fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog a long-range look at what’s coming next for both properties. The studio has also announced a theatrical rerelease of “Top Gun” in celebration of its 40th anniversary.
New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie Arrives November 17, 2028
Paramount has placed an untitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film on its release calendar for November 17, 2028. Although plot details are still being kept under wraps, the project is confirmed to be a family-oriented live-action/CG hybrid, marking the first time the Turtles will appear in a live-action setting since 2016’s “TMNT: Out of the Shadows”.
The movie is being produced by Neal H. Moritz, the veteran producer behind several blockbuster franchises, including Paramount’s enormously successful “Sonic the Hedgehog” films.
Paramount recently found fresh success with the Turtles through 2023’s animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. A sequel, “Mutant Mayhem 2”, is slated for September 17, 2027.
Paramount Plans “Sonic Universe Event Film” for December 22, 2028
The studio has also set December 22, 2028 for what it calls an “untitled Sonic Universe Event Film.”
This new entry is unrelated to “Sonic the Hedgehog 4”, which is already scheduled to premiere earlier on March 19, 2027. Considering the combined global box office for the first three Sonic films has crossed $1 billion, the franchise has become one of Paramount’s most valuable live-action and CG hybrids.
Moritz is again attached as producer, signaling the studio’s continued confidence in the team behind its most successful game-to-film adaptations.
Top Gun Returning to Theaters in 2026
Alongside its franchise announcements, Paramount revealed plans to bring the original “Top Gun” back to theaters on May 13, 2026 for its 40th anniversary.
Directed by Tony Scott and starring Tom Cruise,” Top Gun” became the highest-grossing film of 1986, earning $357.4 million worldwide and solidifying Cruise as a global star.
The sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick”, released in 2022, soared even higher—becoming Paramount’s biggest hit in the company’s 113-year history with $1.49 billion at the global box office.
More details—such as cast, directors, and plot information for both the 2028 films—are expected to emerge in the coming years as these projects move deeper into development.
