No, Disney Did Not Buy TikTok

Recently it was announced that TikTok may have to shut down next month in the United States if an acceptable buyer can’t be found. This has led to many rumors about who could purchase the popular video platform. Among the rumored purchasers of TikTok has been the Walt Disney Company.

Now a new article from Mouse Chat News, which is a Disney parody site, has announced that Disney has purchased TikTok for $100 billion.

However, this is not true.

The article jokes that the purchase is Disney’s most expensive ever, given that the Fox deal was over $71 billion a few years ago.

It further jokes that Disney plans on turning it into a subscription app like Disney+, but again, this is simply parody.

As of now, TikTok is still scheduled to be shut down stateside on January 19, 2025, unless a buyer for the Chinese ByteDance-owned platform can be found.

According to CNN,

“Under the law, app stores could face major fines if they continue to host TikTok following the deadline, if it’s not sold. For users who already have the app downloaded, that likely means they could continue to use it for a while but would not be able to receive updates, which would eventually make it buggy and potentially useless.”

TikTok plans to take their case to the Supreme Court after losing their initial court battle and their appeal. They are arguing freedom of speech.

It is possible they could get an extension on the shuttering if they can get a stay issued by the court. But at this time without a sale TikTok will need to go offline.

While there are some companies that have shown interest in the incredibly popular platform, no one has actually purchased the company. Including Disney.
