Disney is now starting to do more with their new Fox acquisition assets.
They plan on debuting a new Simpsons short ahead of Onward during it’s theatrical release.
The Simpsons account on Instagram posted the following:
The new short will feature Maggie Simpson and is called “Playdate with Destiny” according to the Instagram write up:
“Maggie Simpson is speechless… Playdate with Destiny, a new Simpsons short film before Disney & Pixar’s Onward. Exclusively in theaters! #TheSimpsons”
This is a smart move from Disney as The Simpsons are incredibly popular and so far the early reviews for Onward are mixed. Several critics say it doesn’t bring the feelings you would expect from Pixar, while others think it is a great addition to the Disney/Pixar library.
Currently Rotten Tomatoes has it sitting at 84%.
So if Disney is worried the audiences might not turn out due to early reviews or the current health concerns, they might think putting up the brand new Maggie short, and making it exclusive, could be the extra incentive for some.
It’s a good move.
Onward and Playdate with Destiny will hit theaters on March 6th.
