It looks like Tim Allen will once again be playing Scott Calvin / Santa for Disney. According to Variety, Disney has greenlit a new limited series based on the “Santa Clause” franchise produced by 20th Century Television.
Here is the series synopsis according to Variety:
“In the series, Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can’t be Santa forever. He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties, and more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole. With a lot of elves, children, and family to please, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the pole.”
So it sounds like this is setting up a replacement. Tim Allen has gotten older and a replacement would mean Disney could continue ‘Santa Clause” shows or films moving forward.
The franchise is going on 30 years with the first film releasing in 1994 and the second and third film releasing in 2002 and 2006 respectively.
No word on casting, new or returning, outside of Tim Allen yet, but stay tuned. We do know that Jack Burditt, who created “Last Man Standing” will be the showrunner. He will also executive produce on the series along with Tim Allen. Other executive producers will be Kevin Hench, Richard Baker and Rick Messina.
Production is to begin in March.
