New Rumor Has Dwayne Johnson Replacing Johnny Depp As Pirates of the Caribbean Star

As the Johnny Depp / Amber Heard case is wrapping up a new rumor has just arrived involving the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. According to Giant Freakin Robot (so take it with a grain of salt) Johnson is being eyed as a potential star in a Pirates of the Caribbean spin off.  Honestly ‘The Jungle Cruise’ film was basically ‘The Mummy’ meets ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ anyways, but I digress.

According to this new rumor this makes a third potential spin-off that is in the works (or he could just be added to one of the other two films already being developed.) One being with Margot Robbie, another one and then this one. Because it takes three different films to just attempt to replace Captain Jack Sparrow.

But if they might make a second ‘Jungle Cruise’ film why would they put Johnson in for this one too? Seems kind of redundant.

It’s also tiring with constant re-imaginings of things that basically just means a gender swap. When they replaced the auction scene in the attraction with Redd the Pirate it was clear what they were likely thinking.

Another rumor that they reported was that Bill Nighy was in talks to play Davy Jones again in the Margot Robbie film. So it seems they are trying to get popular characters back to make this one stick. I don’t think the films will do that well given the very public court case and the massive amount of public support behind Depp.

Depp indicated in court that he wouldn’t return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise after everything that has happened. Disney is likely trying to make a new character stick so they can keep on making Pirates films. I’m sure they also want a new character to replace all the Captain Jack Sparrow animatronics in the attractions as well.

Frankly, how many ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films do we need? I wonder how many are meant to go directly to Disney+? Why not milk other attractions for films?

Clearly Giant Freakin Robot is happy that a smaller star like Depp is out and is very excited about the potential “bigger star” replacements. I don’t think it’s going to go over as well and at this point Disney should just stop while they’re ahead.

There are no details on who is being eyed for the third spinoff, but it will surely be someone exciting. Nothing against Johnny Depp, as he was fantastic in the films, but now the franchise is set to have even bigger stars. Both Johnson and Robbie are at the top of their game right now. This new direction for Pirates is going to be quite interesting.”

We shall see what happens. But I can tell you that fan reaction to this rumor hasn’t been overly positive.
