Just recently a brand new artificial intelligence video generating application known as PIKA was publicly released. The application claims to be able to generate a video using entirely artificial elements with just a few words leaves people in both amazement and horror.
While admittedly still in early stages of development, this new technology is advertised as “A new kind of movie magic.” which will definitely see more advancements as time goes forward.
While only just publicly released, months ago the PIKA technology, along with Midjourney, was used to create a short experiment. This being a “trailer” for a Star Wars themed story. While originally published in September, the video is now being shared around via social media due to the public launch of the application.
The description of the video by user Curious Refuge says that “We recently gave a talk in Hollywood about the future of storytelling and were asked to put together a quick tech demo. The result was this very short film sequence that we put together in just a few hours.”

Admittedly, the moth movements and character movements aren’t all that great, but when holding still many of the visuals are rather impressive. The various alien designs definitely feel like they fit. It is also stated that the human and alien audio was AI-generated and that the application created the alien language.

This highlights one of the many concerns Hollywood actors and writers have had during the recent strikes, faring that major studios would seek to replace them with an algorithm to save both time and money. Then again, it is still in early development. It is doubtful that audiences would pay to see a film that looks like this in motion.

Still, it can be seen as worrisome. As technology advances, studios may be less inclined to use real human creativity if they can save a few bucks using a computer. This is especially worrisome for future artists who may never get a chance to share their creativity with the world.
What do you think? Does this “experiment” make you worried or excited for the future?
