Today Marvel released another “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” trailer. The 1960s aesthetic and world is showcased more heavily. This trailer focuses on the dynamics between the characters and their world.
We also get to see Reed Richards stretch, and we get a look at Shalla-Bal, the new Silver Surfer.
Here is the trailer,
My thoughts on the trailer,
I still don’t think Pedro Pascal was the best choice for Reed Richards, but I do love the dynamics the team has with the everyday people around them.
Why does Sue Storm appear to be the main character of this film? She isn’t the leader of the team, yet she is seemingly shown as the leader repeatedly. Historically Reed Richards always took charge and was widely regarded as the leader of the team, and often was the leader in Marvel team-ups as well. His strength is not just stretching, he is one of the smartest people in the Marvel Universe.
Even the scene where Shalla-Bal comes up from the bottom of the screen, they show Sue Storm rising up in the same way, making her appear to be the main challenger.
Hopefully, this is just how the trailer has been put together and not the dynamics in the film.
The Silver Surfer being a woman will likely bother some. Shalla-Bal was Norrin Rad’s girlfriend and did become the Silver Surfer briefly in the comics (one issue and a couple of “What If” comics). If the theory is true that this universe is not the sacred timeline, it is possible that in the 616 Norrin Rad is still the main Silver Surfer, but there were several Surfers.

Reed Richards stretching was not as bad as I expected.

To be fair, it is hard to do this in live action and not look silly. But I don’t think it’s that terrible, the little was saw of it.
Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” will hit theaters on July 25, 2025!
