Disney gave more information on the upcoming Cars are coming to the Magic Kingdom that a lot of people don’t want. They are going to completely remove the Rivers of America from Frontierland/Liberty Square to add an offroading attraction based on a franchise that most people don’t really care about. But I digress.
During the SXSW panel Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter, and Imagineer Michael Hundgen took the stage to talk about the new Cars ride.
Inventing a new ride vehicle.
Part of the R&D for the new Cars attraction is going to be new ride vehicles that can be utilized for this attraction.
Hundgen explained how they have to invent a new vehicle as opposed to buying one.
Add New Post“Our primary goal is creating an emotional experience for our guests. For this Cars attraction, we need to invent a new type of ride vehicle. No one builds these in a factory because it has to do so much more than just carrying you from one place to another. We have to create a car that conveys a feeling when you ride in it.”
As part of their research, the team visited the Arizona desert, using existing off-road vehicles to get a feel for the terrain that will be featured in the attraction.
Then, the Imagineers worked with a motocross company to build a demo track so they could use a vehicle with sensors to record data for the attraction.
“We’re using a customized production vehicle. It has sensors all over it, and we’re taking it for test drives on our dirt track to gather data on how the vehicle responds to different terrain. This is where we turn that feeling we want into real-world engineering.”
Here is the video they showed,

They also shared concept sketches of “new cars” they are developing for this attraction.

I am still not sold on this one. I don’t think it fits the area at all. Plus I think they should have kept at least some of the water way in tact.
