NBCUniversal and U-Next partner on streaming and theme parks

NBCUniversal and Japanese streamer U-Next announced a three-part partnership covering streaming, theme park experiences, and exporting Japanese content abroad. U-Next subscribers may get exclusive Universal Studios Japan benefits, and anime could land on Peacock.

NBCUniversal signed a partnership in Japan that runs well past the usual content licensing deal.

The company announced a long-term strategic agreement Monday with U-Next, Japan’s second-largest streaming service, covering three separate areas: streaming rights, Universal Studios Japan, and pushing Japanese content into overseas markets.

No financial terms were disclosed, and neither company reported an equity investment.

Universal+ launches in Japan in October

Universal+, NBCUniversal’s international streaming brand, becomes exclusive to U-Next in Japan, rolling out from October 2026. It brings content from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation, Illumination, Universal Studio Group, and Sky.

Starting in spring 2027, U-Next subscribers get major theatrical releases shortly after their cinema runs, plus first-run NBCUniversal series, exclusively and on a rolling basis.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey opens in Japan on September 11, and Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day follows on October 1. Television titles include The Five Star Weekend, Line of Fire, and War, alongside library series like Suits and Heroes.

Streaming subscribers may get theme park perks

Universal Studios Japan turns 25 in 2026, and the two companies will jointly develop live music events, produce video content featuring the park, and offer what the announcement describes as exclusive experiences and benefits for U-Next subscribers.

Worth noting the language is exploratory. The companies said they will explore joint development rather than announcing a finished product, and specifics are expected in the coming months.

The pipe runs both directions

Most Hollywood deals in Japan are about getting American content in. This one also commits to sending Japanese content out.

The third pillar builds distribution pathways for Japanese dramas, anime, films, and U-Next original productions through Peacock in the United States and Universal+ in Latin America, with plans to expand into more markets over time.

For American viewers, that means anime and Japanese drama could start appearing on Peacock through a route that did not previously exist. Nothing specific has been announced yet.

Chris Taylor, NBCUniversal’s managing director for Asia Pacific TV distribution and international networks, described the appeal as breadth. “For NBCUniversal, it brings together our film and television catalog, our theme park experiences through Universal Studios Japan and our global distribution,” he said.

Who U-Next actually is

U-Next launched in 2007 and is operated by the Usen & U-Next Group. It holds more than 5.2 million paid subscriptions as of May 2026, according to GEM Partners, making it the second-largest paid streamer in Japan behind Netflix.

Its app bundles films, television, anime, sports including the Premier League, live music, and e-books together. It also carries HBO Max through a branded hub, so Universal+ will sit alongside a competitor’s catalog on the same service.

Universal is having a strong year

The deal lands during a good stretch for the studio.

Universal became the first studio in 2026 to cross $3 billion at the international box office, driven by The Odyssey, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Michael. That is only the third time since 2019 that any studio has hit the mark internationally, and the third time Universal has done it.

Whether U-Next subscribers end up with early access to Universal Studios Japan or just a discount code remains to be seen. The companies have promised details in the coming months, and the park’s 25th anniversary gives them a reason to move.
