Multiple Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Projects Possibly In Development?

In 2020 it was announced that Disney would be making an animated adaptation of the popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series. The film rights were acquired by Disney when they purchased 20th Century Fox, who had already done four live action adaptations. This past week a trailer was dropped and seems to try and recreate the art style and feel of the original illustrations. The film will be releasing on December 3rd Exclusively on Disney Plus (Shocker). Hopefully the film will live up to the books, similarly to when BlueSky made 2015’s Peanuts.

Recently the series’ author,  Jeff Kinney, was making an appearance at Martinsville to promote his new book. While there he was asked about his opinions on the 4th Live Action film “The Long Haul“.

His response was:

A lot of people give ‘The Long Haul’ a hard time, and I think it was hard for people, because we had that cast that was so consistent for three movies, then we started with a new cast, and I think that was a little upsetting for people. I thought was fun. I think a road-trip movie is always fun. We’re starting things up again with Disney Plus. …It’s pretty cool to see Greg in that animated 3-D kind of world, so that’s what we’re going to be doing for a while. I don’t think we’re going to be going back to the live action soon.

When he says “That’s what we’re going to be doing for a while” it does somewhat imply that the creative team behind the film adaptation is working on multiple projects with the IP. The series was profitable for 20th Century Fox, having made four movies. So perhaps Disney themselves are planning on making this a franchise as well.  Jeff Kinney seems okay with it, so perhaps that’s what is happening.

The new film releases on December 3rd. Are you excited to see the series return?
