Mufasa Beats Sonic For the Weekend

“Mufasa: The Lion King” finally beat “Sonic 3” for a weekend at the box office. “Sonic 3” has beaten the new “Lion King” film domestically for two weekends prior. The third weekend went to Mufasa with around $23 million compared to “Sonic 3” at $20 million.

Overall, Mufasa is in more theaters with, 3,925 locations, compared to Sonic at 3,746 locations. The Disney film is currently sitting at almost $169M, while Sonic will hit around $186M by Sunday.

While Mufasa won the weekend, it is not the #1 film in America.

Globally the story is different as Mufasa had several days of release before Sonic.

Sonic has made about $74 million internationally, putting its global total at almost $211 million. Mufasa is definitely using its earlier market release to its advantage, giving it a global total of almost $353 million. Most of its box office has been pulled from the overseas market.

Since the film cost about $200 million to make, “Mufasa” will break even and likely profit, but it’s a far cry from the 2019 “The Lion King” take of $1.7 billion.

It’s a win, but it’s nowhere near the box office totals Disney used to boast about. Maybe people are just tired of live-action animation stories, even when it’s a totally new adventure.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” did cost a lot less than Mufasa at around $122 million. It, too, will break even and make money.

As to which film will win the box office, we will have to wait and see where they end up at the end of their runs. Both films are currently in theaters now if you want to watch one or both.
