Morbius Makes $84 Million At The Box Office Opening Weekend

The latest film in the SONY backed Spider-Verse shared universe of films has done moderately well on its opening weekend at the box office. Bringing in $39.1 Million domestically and $44.9 Million internationally on a $75 Million budget. Though it has recouped the production costs it still needs a little bit more to cover the marketing costs in order to break even.

Though it shows some promise Morbius comes in is slightly below Venom: Let There Be Carnage which had a $90 Million opening weekend and overall $500 Million haul. And that’s just a drop in the bucket compared to the $260 Million for Spider-Man: No Way Home which ended up bringing in over $1.8 Billion.

The film is also competing with both the recently released Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film as well as the recent The Batman from Warner Bros. which just earned $700 Million globally. So competition is definitely having an affect.

Though it is too early to call it the film’s review score might affect the film’s overall performance. Critics mercilessly tore the film apart with it currently sitting at a 17% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite that the audience score is sitting at 70%. Most movie goers seem to view the film as middle of the road while some say it’s just a bad film.

With SONY planning more movies set in this “Spider-Man Cinematic Universe” some are worried that they will repeat the same mistakes with the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man films. Wanting to do as many tie-in films and spinoffs to get more butts in seats.

Hopefully SONY will be able to course correct before it’s too late and either be forced back into another deal with Marvel Studios or outright relinquish the film rights to the character back to Disney for the right price.

Do you think Morbius will have a decent run at the box office?
