“Moana 2” has smashed Thanksgiving holiday records and will likely earn around $386 million globally for its opening run.
While the final results will not be in until Monday or Tuesday, it’s looking like “Moana 2” will be going pretty far after the 5-day holiday box office. The film will bring in about $221 million domestically and another $165+ million from the international market.
The film ended up being the biggest animated opening of all time in several overseas markets, including France, Poland, Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon, Nigeria, Serbia, and more. “Moana 2” won’t be released in Japan, Hong Kong, and Thailand until Friday.
Domestically, the film set a new record for the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, beating the previous record set by “Frozen 2” in 2019 ($125 million) by almost $100 million.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the Critical Score for the film is 65%, and the Audience Score sits at 87%, while All Audiences have the film at 81%, which is still quite high.
The “Moana 2” reviews I have heard are mixed. However, my son saw it yesterday and said that it isn’t a bad film, but you can tell it was meant to be an episodic show. He also mentioned that the songs are “bad” and nothing like the original Moana, which had iconic “bangers.” For what it’s worth, he is usually quite fair in his reviews.
Overall- not bad, but not as good as the first film.
I have been hearing this from many other people I trust. For me I am going to wait for the film to release on Disney+. But it seems that many people around the world went to the theater to see Moana and Maui on another adventure!
I fully expect a press release any day now from Disney.
What do you think? Did you see it? How was it?
