Simea’s purpose in the film is to anchor Moana to her home in Motunui.
Entertainment Weekly released a new look at Simea for the upcoming “Moana 2” film.

The co-director based Moana and Simea’s relationship on his own family.
David Derrick Jr. had kids of similar ages during the pandemic and used their experiences after lockdown when his daughter could once again return to normal life outside as inspiration. He said, “He would grab her and he’s like, ‘Samea, when are we going to live together forever again? It was so hard, but I was seeing things that we all have to go through as you grow up. It’s beautiful and it’s difficult.”
Kevin Webb, one of the head animators, said that he also based Simea on his own daughter as well. He told EW,
Webb also used videos of his daughter running or moving to base Simea’s movement on. This will likely bring an even greater sense of realism to the upcoming film.
