Entertainment Weekly released a new look at Simea for the upcoming “Moana 2” film.

Moana 2 Moana and Simea

The co-director based Moana and Simea’s relationship on his own family.

David Derrick Jr. had kids of similar ages during the pandemic and used their experiences after lockdown when his daughter could once again return to normal life outside as inspiration. He said,  “He would grab her and he’s like, ‘Samea, when are we going to live together forever again? It was so hard, but I was seeing things that we all have to go through as you grow up. It’s beautiful and it’s difficult.

Kevin Webb, one of the head animators, said that he also based Simea on his own daughter as well. He told EW,
“When we were developing Simea’s personality, a lot of it came from, ‘What would it be like to grow up with a big sister as cool and badass as Moana? Simea is going to be just as scrappy and fiery as Moana was when she was little. So, we tried to come up with a strong enough personality for her that we could match Moana’s energy on screen, which is a really fun alchemy to play with when you have this 3-and-a-half-year-old version of a character that is very unique in their own way, but is still connected to Moana.
Webb also used videos of his daughter running or moving to base Simea’s movement on. This will likely bring an even greater sense of realism to the upcoming film.
As adults, we gain this dexterity and this ability to be precise with our movements, but kids are chaos when they’re running. They’re not so much running, but stopping themselves from falling over at a very high speed. She’s almost tripping over her feet. That makes her very specifically feel of that age.
I am looking forward to seeing the sibling dynamic in the upcoming film. Moana is a great character, and now Simea sounds like she will be a lot of fun as well. Family will be a key theme.
Moana 2″ will be released to theaters on November 27 and stars Dwayne Johnson (Maui), Auli’i Cravalho (Moana), Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda (Simea), Temuera Morrison (Tui), Nicole Scherzinger (Sina), Rachel House (Gramma Tala), Rose Matafeo (Loto), and Alan Tudyk (HeiHei).
