Military Inspired Creations at Voodoo Doughnut Orlando

Voodoo Doughnut never fails to offer special seasonal doughnuts. For Veteran’s Day Weekend, two new doughnuts arrived.

With the celebration of Veteran’s Day Weekend occurring in the United States, Voodoo Doughnut at Universal CityWalk Orlando designed two new military-themed doughnuts. Voodoo Doughnut earned a reputation for unique and unexpected doughnuts. Even the theme park resort varieties often look out of place.

So, what does a military-inspired Voodoo Doughnut look like? We needed to find out. Presently, we do not know how long these doughnuts will be around. Still, we expected them to last a little past the holiday weekend. We suspect a new limited-time doughnut will replace these for the Thanksgiving season. Both Veteran’s Day doughnuts cost $4.25 before applicable discounts such as annual passholder discounts. They are:

  • Military – a raised shell doughnut filled with apple filling and topped with vanilla icing in the colors of the United States of America flag.
  • Devil Dog – a chocolate cake doughnut sliced in half, filled with whipped topping, and dipped in camo icing.

We ordered the Devil Dog version since the Military one resembled many previous doughnuts here. The ordering process functioned poorly, as usual, at Voodoo Doughnut Orlando. The team members were confused about the doughnut being available. After pointing out that the mobile order system indicates it is available, the staff moved to acquire one for us.

Since it was Veteran’s Day Weekend, the queue and process for ordering moved slowly, even for Voodoo Doughnut. However, from previous experiences here, we know that mobile ordering would have been worse.

Our first reaction to the doughnut involved how tough it would be to eat without making a mess. The team members ensured that we needed a box even though we only got one doughnut today. As we tried to take some photos, we encountered the expected issues with soft cake doughnuts. However, the doughnut needed to be eaten. We cut the doughnut in two. The mess factor will be high with this one.

How did it taste? Well, the whipped topping works fine. It fulfills the role of a devil dog-style sweet treat. As we ate more of the doughnut, the whipped cream tasted far better when paired with the other components.

Also, the camo icing brings a bit of positive flavor. Still, we love this “soft” chocolate cake doughnut. If we could have had more of that, we would have just ordered it with a side of whipped cream. Of course, we would need a fork and knife to enjoy it truly! Be warned that Voodoo Doughnut does not offer forks. It does offer knives, which we had to ask for one.

If not for the mess factor, this would rank up with our favorite theme park doughnuts. The flavors work with this non-traditional formula for Voodoo Doughnut.  We enjoyed the sugary treat without being overwhelmed by the sugar. If you find yourself at Universal Orlando Resort, this deserves to be considered. We expect this to make the next Top Three Things article. As always, eat like you mean it!
