The apparent cancellation of the recent Star Wars spin-off series The Acolyte has the media in a frenzy. Despite being propped up by multiple outlets, the series was turning heads as soon as it was announced.
The series went on to become one of the lowest-viewed Star Wars shows on Disney+ and currently holds the record for the lowest-rated piece of Star Wars television on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 18% audience score below shows like The Ewoks or even the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. This has led to accusations of review bombing.
While not confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm themselves, a report via Deadline stated that Disney would not renew the show after the first season even though multiple more seasons were said to be planned out.
The viewership was not big enough to justify a continuation, much like the short lived Willow series nearly two years ago.
More evidence of this has appeared, as merchandise is no longer listed on the Disney Online store. As of the writing of this article, when pulling up the Disney Store website and entering “The Acolyte” into the search bar, the results are blank.
Previously, items such as a Mae T-shirt were available for purchase on the site. But now, all officially branded merchandise for the series is only available through third-party retailers.
While it is possible merchandise sold out after the cancelation announcement, many point to the possible delisting of merchandise from the official Disney Store, seemingly confirming the company’s decision to no longer invest in the series, be it another season or through clothing sales.
While the show itself hasn’t been outright removed from Disney+ (at least not yet), similar to the Willow series, it serves as the latest in a line of shows based on Lucasfilm properties that have performed below expectations. Hopefully, it can be used as a learning experience going forward.
