Some media outlets are headlining their articles with the narrative that “Captain America: Brave New World” has already broken a record.
What record?
It’s the shortest film out of all the Captain Amercia films.
I’m not kidding. That’s it. That is the “record” this film has already “broken.”
It’s true. “Captain America: Brave New World” will be the shortest film of the Captain America films, coming in at 118 minutes or (1 hour 58 minutes) which is a solid run time for a film.
How long were the other Captain America movies?
- “Captain America: The First Avenger” was six minutes longer in 2011, at 124 minutes (2 hours and 4 minutes).
- “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was 18 minutes longer, coming in at 136 minutes (2 hours and 16 minutes) back in 2014.
- “Captain America: Civil War” was almost half an hour longer, coming in at 147 minutes (2 hours and 27 minutes) back in 2016.
Somehow, the film’s being the shortest, by six minutes, is worthy of headlines indicating that it has already broken a record less than a month before its premiere.
The media is still running with a stellar box office narrative despite the predictions seemingly dropping.
Currently, the projected box office is showing $86 million—$95 million; however, a few days ago, those numbers were reported at $81 million—$107 million.
Semantics are also coming into play. The current estimates are only for three days of the four-day weekend.
This ranks there with the 5-day “weekend” totals that Hollywood and Disney have previously leveraged. I can’t wait till a “weekend” is a week or more.
“Captain America: Brave New World box office projections via the tracking service Quorum indicate the film is expected to open with $86 million to $95M over the 3-day of the 4-day Presidents Day weekend.”
How well will “Captain America: Brave New World” really do?
The answer to this question will solely depend on how good the film turns out to be. I think many people will take a “wait and see” approach to the film, as we saw with “The Marvels.”
People will show up if word-of-mouth is good, but it might be a long burn. Disney won fan goodwill back with “Daredevil & Wolverine,” but this is clearly a very different type of film. Fans don’t really know what to expect of Anthony Mackie’s version of Captain America without a super serum.
Yes, “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” already showed Sam Wilson as Captain America, but the majority of potential viewers didn’t watch it. For many, this will be their first introduction to the new Captain America, so word-of-mouth and presentation are everything.
Plus, this film has already been delayed and moved a couple of times. The reshoots and changes also suggest issues that people may perceive as negative.
That said, it can still do well, but I think it’s going to have an uphill battle.
In conclusion, no, the film hasn’t broken some huge record already ahead of the release, contrary to how it’s being presented.
Captain America: Brave New World will be released in theaters on February 14, 2025, and I’m very interested in seeing how it actually performs. Hopefully, it will exceed expectations.
