Yesterday we reported that the dolls based on the upcoming “Wicked” movie had a printing error on the packaging. Instead of going to the WickedMovie.com site they instead directed customers to a porn site called wicked (dot) com.
Today, Mattel finally realized the error, issued an apology, and recalled the dolls.
Here is what Mattel said,
“Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page. We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the dolls have already been removed from Target and are being removed from other stores, such as Walmart, Amazon, and others.
Sellers are already listing the dolls for ridiculous prices on eBay. Of course, the high-priced ones are not selling.

Reportedly Universal Orlando is handling the issue by blacking out the URL on the box; however, the instructions inside the package also direct fans/customers to the porn website.

This is yet another black eye for the “Wicked” movie. Cynthia Erivo, the actress playing Elphaba came under fire previously for getting angry that a fan made the film poster look more like the original musical poster. Erivo again raised eyebrows with comments about other actresses who auditioned for Ariana Grande’s Glinda character. Honestly, the second issue wasn’t that big of a deal, but the meltdown over the poster really rubbed “Wicked” fans the wrong way.
Now the porn site issue.
Wicked will be released in theaters in just a couple of weeks, on November 22, 2024, just days ahead of Moana 2, which will be released on November 27, 2024.
I really think “Wicked” has the deck stacked against it at this point.
