Last month, during one of Nintendo’s Nintendo Direct livestreams, it was revealed that the popular Marvel vs. Capcom series would be returning via a collection for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC through Steam. Sadly, no Xbox port has been announced, which has garnered a lot of pushback.
Many fans assumed the series was dead due to the critical and financial failure of the 2017 installment, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. Fan movements such as #FreeMvC2 were started to try to get the games re-released.
Aside from an cabinet from Arcade1up it was believed that due to licensing issues and the poor sales of the last game there was little to no hope for a return. But to everyone’s surprise, it came back.
Ever since the announcement, many have wondered how this came about. Such a collection requires multiple parties and licensees to negotiate, such as royalties or sales percentages.
Now we have a bit of an answer thanks to Marvel’s Games’ product development manager, Laura Hathaway. She recently appeared on the official Marvel podcast and went into some of the details of the whole ordeal. When asked how the collection game to be she stated:
“We have this rich history of making gamers with Capcom going all the way back to Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, all of those really incredible titles that people remember playing back in the 90’s.“
“We’re always looking for ways to really surprise and hopefully delight our fans. To me the idea of bringing Marvel vs. Capcom back was always really, really exciting to us, so we’re glad to finally be able to announce it.“
The Marvel vs. Capcom collection will contain seven classic arcade games (mostly fighting games) and will be available later this year.
