It seems that after seeing the shot footage for Marvel’s “Daredevil Born Again,” Kevin Feige fired people and wants a “creative reboot” for the show.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show stopped production in mid-June over the WGA strikes and then the SAG-AFTRA strikes. During that downtime, Kevin Feige reviewed the few episodes they had filmed for the 18-episode series and determined that “The show wasn’t working.” THR indicates that the show was almost 1/2 completed.
Late last month, Marvel fired the head writers, Chris Ord and Matt Corman, and the directors they had lined up to finish the show. Now, THR says that Marvel is trying to find new writers and directors for the series. However, Marvel will supposedly keep some of the filmed scenes, and other “serialized elements will be injected.” Cormand and Ord will also receive executive producer credit despite being let go.
It’s interesting, given that fans of the original Netflix show were concerned that they seemed to be going in a lighter direction and chose to eliminate fan-favorite characters like Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll.)
To this point, the Hollywood Reporter’s sources told them that the showrunners were moving too far away from the Netflix version that fans knew and loved:
“Corman and Ord crafted a legal procedural that did not resemble the Netflix version, known for its action and violence. Cox didn’t even show up in costume until the fourth episode. Marvel, after greenlighting the concept, found itself needing to rethink the original intention of the show.”
Disney has found itself in a position with Marvel over the rising costs of these shows that have not been performing as well as they hoped, especially “Secret Invasion.” Now, a show that has already been almost half-shot will be completely reworked. That is going to cost a lot of money. They have to do it because if the show is too far removed from the Netflix version, fans will fail to return for the Disney+ series.
Maybe Disney and Marvel are starting to realize they must focus on films and shows that stay true to the characters people already know and love. They need to make a better wheel instead of just trying to reinvent one.
