Marvel and Disney Release “The Marvels” Final Trailer But It Seems Desperate

Everyone is talking about how “The Marvels” early ticket sales aren’t doing very well, even without any significant competition at the box office and them getting an IMAX theatrical release after “Dune 2” moved to 2024. Now Disney has released its final trailer, and it feels like they are relying on Member Berries and FOMO to try and get people to the theater.

Currently, the box office estimates are frankly all over the place, with different sites guessing totals ranging from $45 million – $90 million. But even then, long-term estimates do not have this film doing very well, at least domestically. This leads us to this “final trailer,” which seems to be a complete switch from the earlier trailers that went more for the “girl team” and humor elements.

Remember that the director, Nia DaCosta, said this film was different because it was “wacky and silly.” The early trailers seemed to showcase that more, and now the new trailers seem to focus on how “intense” the new film is supposed to be. Which is it?

Then Disney has embargoed any film reviews until tomorrow, November 8, just a day before early release and two days before the official release. Traditionally, studios don’t do that unless they know they either have a big reveal or think it won’t review well.

However, the trailer teases a multiverse and a possible setup for “Secret Wars.”

Here’s the new trailer

The trailer starts off showing Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Steve Rogers (Captain America), with Nick Fury’s voice talking about how heroes are an “old-fashioned notion.” Then he says, “But the world can still use them” before flashing to Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel.) It seemed like the men were the “old fashioned notion,” and heroes were still needed, hence Captain Marvel. I’m unsure if that was the intended reaction, but that’s how it comes across.

The new trailer cuts once again to the scene in Avengers: Endgame where all the female heroes come in together and talk about how Thanos was destroyed, and now this new threat is implied to be stronger than Thanos.

Monica Rambeau (Photon) is seen saying that the new big bad “tore a hole in space and not there’s a different reality bleeding into ours.” Then throw in the new comics where they have made Kamala Kahn a mutant now. It seems this film is trying to lead into “X-Men” and “Secret Wars.” The new version of “Secret Wars,” not the good one from the 1980s.

Then, the trailer shows us that while Captain Marvel thinks herself invincible, the new villain is stronger. While far more intense scenes than the dance number we say in early trailers are shown, the words “This Friday, Be There For The Moment That Changes Everything” flash across the screen to drum up the feeling of FOMO.

Disney is going all in on this trailer, trying to get people to the theaters. There are rumors of post-credit scenes bringing in Beast from the X-Men films leading into “Deadpool 3” and “X-men”. and another possible setup for Young Avengers; they are throwing everything they have at this film to save it. However, the budget is already so high the film would reportedly have to do over $600-$700 million just to break even.

Disney and Marvel can no longer expect $ 1 billion-plus films anymore. Except for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” they have hit box office bomb and box office bomb this year.

Tomorrow, we will start seeing early reviews, and it could be good. It could do well. But Disney definitely seems worried.
