Marvel and Beau DeMayo Issue Statements on X-Men ’97 Termination

Before X-Men ’97 launched on Disney+, the show’s writer, Beau DeMayo, was suddenly terminated, even though he had completed work on the show’s second season. Now, DeMayo is speaking out, and Marvel is responding.

Yesterday on X, DeMayo issued a couple of tweets that appear to pin the reason for his writing credits being removed due to an inconsequential piece of fan art from back in June:

Firstly, I’m so grateful to have worked on #XMen97, collaborating with some amazingly talented folks. Creating this revival was a dream come true and the support fans have shown is so touching. However, I felt it pressing for me to speak up in the wake of leaving the show…Above is #XMen fan-art I posted on Instagram for Gay Pride in June. On June 13, #Marvel sent a letter notifiying me that they’d stripped my Season 2 credits due to the post. sadly, this is the latest in a troubling pattern I suffered through while wokring on #XMen97 and #Blade.

Marvel unexpectedly issued a statement exclusively to The Hollywood Reporter:

Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately, and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.

Rumors swirled back in March that the reason for the writer’s dismissal was due to his OnlyFans account. Unnamed sources, according to Variety, state that the investigation allegedly uncovered “sexual misconduct” and DeMayo had “repeatedly violated his termination agreement.

While not exactly coming out and claiming that Disney/Marvel were anti-LGBTQ, DeMayo does state that there is a pattern to how he was treated while working for the massive media company:

The truth will be revealed. After their Disney Plus disaster, Marvel wants to mislead with alleged contract breaches over tweets. It’s tragic it’s come to this but unsurprising. Stay tuned.

This is their Disney-Marvel’s usual playbook. Legal letters as well as other items to prove their long-standing pattern to follow . It’s about finding a safe outlet. Thanks for your faith and patience.

It’s unclear if Marvel will release the findings of the investigation. Who do you think is in the right here? Let us know.
