General Mills has a Buddy the Elf tie-in running across Chex, Pillsbury, and Fruit by the Foot this holiday season. The new item is a Walmart-exclusive Maple Syrup Chex, which is about as literal an adaptation of the character as anyone could manage.
Buddy the Elf’s four main food groups are candy, candy canes, candy corns, and syrup.
General Mills has now built a cereal out of the fourth one.
Maple Syrup Chex has turned up at Walmart, made with real maple syrup and tied to the 2003 film. Product hunters spotted it on shelves in early September, and it anchors a broader Elf lineup General Mills is running through the holidays.
The Elf lineup, as reported
According to reporting citing General Mills materials, the seasonal push covers several products:
- Maple Syrup Chex, exclusive to Walmart
- Elf Cereal, sweetened corn cereal with marshmallows
- Pillsbury Elf Cinnamon Rolls with maple icing
- Pillsbury Ready-to-Bake Elf Shape Sugar Cookie Dough, with 20 pre-cut cookies topped with Buddy’s green-and-yellow hat
- Fruit by the Foot Elf Mini Feet in a Buddy’s Berry Tie-Dye flavor
There is also a Chex Party Mix Holiday assortment spanning Rice, Corn, Wheat, Cinnamon, Chocolate, and the new Maple Syrup variety.
The Elf cereal is not new
Elf Cereal launched in 2020, and General Mills has brought it back seasonally since. The original release featured maple-flavored corn puffs with green and red holiday tree marshmallows, and a box front showing Buddy alongside the Arctic Puffin and Mr. Narwhal.
At launch, it sold for $2.50 for a mid-size box and $3.99 for family size, alongside a returning Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch.
Current retailer listings still describe the cereal as sweetened corn puffs with holiday tree marshmallows.
Maple Syrup Chex is new
Product spotters found it at Walmart on September 3.
It is also the most on-the-nose possible product. Buddy’s defining gag across the entire film is pouring maple syrup onto things that should not have maple syrup on them, starting with spaghetti. General Mills has made the cereal.
The Chex tin promotion
A receipt-based offer is reportedly running alongside the lineup.
Buying three participating Chex boxes in a single transaction by December 31, 2026 reportedly qualifies shoppers to submit a receipt for a limited-edition Elf holiday tin, while supplies last.

General Mills does this every year now
The Elf push fits a pattern the company has run for a while.
Monster Cereals returned this fall for their 55th anniversary with a second consecutive year of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop puppet packaging. Nature Valley ran a Peanuts collaboration last holiday season. The company also produced a Baby Yoda cereal tied to The Mandalorian in 2020.
Licensed seasonal cereal has become a reliable part of the calendar, and General Mills is one of the few companies with enough shelf brands to run a single license across breakfast, refrigerated dough, and fruit snacks simultaneously.
Other products
Some other products have been rumored, including the Pillsbury products and Fruit by the Foot, but they haven’t been spotted yet.
No prices have been announced for any 2026 item. Availability varies by store, as it does with every seasonal grocery run.
If you want the Chex, Walmart is the only place carrying it.
