Madam Web Trailer Analysis. Spider-Women Assemble.

The next installment of SONY’s Spider-Verse has released its first trailer. Madame Web stars Dakota Johnson as the titular heroine gifted with foresight, with Tahar Rahim as the lead antagonist, Ezekiel Sims, who is trying to alter the future. It also stars Sydney Sweeny as Julia Carpenter, aka Spider-Woman; Celeste O’Conner as Mattie Franklin, aka Spider-Woman; and Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, aka Spider-Girl.

From the trailer, we can see that the film, as opposed to being a standalone hero affair, is an all-female Spider-Woman team-up movie where four spider-themed characters from the comics work together to stop the villain from altering time.

The concept of an antagonist in a black Spider-Man-themed outfit racing across time to battle the main protagonist, who also has a team of spider-themed heroes on his side, feels very reminiscent of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. It almost feels like they were trying to recreate the success of that film here.

It should be noted that many of the characters do appear different from their comic book counterparts. Ezekiel Sims, for example, is an old man in the comics with a bright red outfit.

However, in the movie, he is a younger man with an all-black outfit resembling Miles Morales.

Also noticeable is that both Mattie Franklin and Anya Corazon have been race-swapped from their original comic interpretations. It is a missed opportunity not to have the 1974 Spider-Woman “Valarie” in the film as she was the first character to use the name, and she was African-American.

It is currently unknown how or when this film connects to the other Spider-Verse films or how it might connect to the MCU as a whole, given the multiverse connections through Venom and Morbius.
