Live-Action Gargoyles Series In Development For Disney+

After many years of speculation and fan outcry Disney is apparently answering the fans of the cult classic 1990s cartoon Gargoyles by producing a live-action series for Disney+. The series originally aired from 1994 – 1997 and had 78 episodes across three seasons.

The series will be helmed by horror film writer and Swamp Thing producer Gary Duberman. The series will be produced by well-known director/writer James Wan under the Atomic Monster Label.

The current synopsis for the adaptation reads: “Based on the cult classic Disney animated series, Goliath is the last of a heroic race of gargoyle warriors who once lived among mankind. Free from a centuries-long curse that turned him into stone, Goliath struggles to solve the mystery of his past while watching over modern-day New York City alongside police detective Elisa Maza.

It is currently unknown if any of the original voice cast from the series will return to lend their voices to the titular Gargoyles themselves. Many fans will, of course, demand the voice of Keith David as Goliath. While it is possible that actors like Jeff Bennett and Bill Fagerbakke could return, some characters would obviously be recast as actors like Ed Asner (who voiced Hudson) have passed away.

While many fans are obviously happy with the news, the series’ creator, Greg Wiseman, may not be as chipper. He has expressed in the past that he would rather continue the series in animated form over a reboot. The series’ third season was seen as a sore spot by many, and he would like to give the show a proper ending.

Only time will tell if this new series is worthy of living up to the original. Let’s hope it isn’t as disappointing as the recent Willow series.

Are you looking forward to the new live-action Gargoyles? What characters would you like to see?
