“Lilo & Stitch” will likely bring in more money in the domestic opening weekend than “Snow White” made for its domestic total.
According to Quorum, the data shows that “Lilo & Stitch” will open to over $100 million domestically. It is important to note that it will open on Memorial Day weekend and will have a longer span as a four-day weekend. But the low end of estimates has it making more than “Snow White”, which hasn’t even made $100 million domestically.
This estimate is before the massive advertising campaign has even launched.
Do we need a live-action “Lilo & Stitch?”
Depends on who you ask. Many think the film is unnecessary, however, Disney needs the film to be a huge hit. The Walt Disney Company is striking out at the theater in 2025, and “Lilo & Stitch” might be their golden ticket.
Public response to the trailer has been overwhelmingly positive.
Concerns about Disney’s takeaway.
My biggest concern about “Lilo & Stitch” doing well is that Disney will take this as a sign that customers want more live-action remakes. Frankly, I do not believe that is what audiences want; otherwise, “Snow White” would have done much better.
Some animated films lend themselves better to live-action and I think “Lilo & Stitch” is one of those films. From the trailer we can see it is mostly following the original, but story changes will likely be made. Even so, people are really excited about this film.
Lilo and Stitch are far cuter than the CGI seven dwarfs. When we are talking about “abominations,” Stitch isn’t the one people are thinking about.
When you have actors people seem to approve of and like, it does make for a better box office take.
Here is the trailer,
People are reacting strongly to it,
“Doesn’t even look like modern day Disney slop. It actually looks faithful to the og. Incredible.” -@beleagueredbeluga5228
“This is the first Disney live-action remake I’m actually excited for, Stitch and the other alien characters look great and it’s really nostalgic to see all the scenes recreated.” – Tarinator
“The actress for Lilo is adorable.” – melissamurray8307
“At this point, Stitch is gonna be carrying Disney on his back.” -brittanyrichardson7732
“OMG!!!! A MODERN DISNEY MOVIE THAT RESPECTED ITS SOURCE MATERIAL!!!!” – demonzone2571
“First time in years I smiled at a Disney live action trailer. Thank God they didn’t screw it up, for now. My baby girl was raised on this movie. It was Lilo and Stitch everyday for almost a year.”-dancumbe
If Disney can deliver on what the trailer promised, they will have a hit.
Again, one hit Disney. Not enough reason to greenlight more live-action reimaginings people don’t want.
“Lilo & Stitch” releases to theaters on May 23, 2025.
