Disney is putting three Mandalorian releases on Disney+ on the same day.
September 2 brings Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, the theatrical film, to streaming. It arrives alongside LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, an all-new animated special, and an official podcast.
Lucasfilm revealed the LEGO special’s trailer and teaser poster at D23.
What LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is
The special is a comedic retelling rather than a new story.
It revisits moments from all three seasons of The Mandalorian in LEGO form, which Lucasfilm frames as suitable for Star Wars and LEGO fans of any age.
The teaser poster shows a first look at Din Djarin and baby Grogu‘s very first meeting, rebuilt in bricks.
D23 attendees got an exclusive early screening on August 15.
Why the same-day release makes sense
Stacking a film, a comedy retelling of the series it came from, and a podcast on one date is a specific kind of programming decision.
The Mandalorian and Grogu took roughly $345 million worldwide theatrically, which Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro acknowledged on the company’s August earnings call fell short of box office expectations.
The streaming debut is where that film gets its second audience, and the LEGO special functions as an on-ramp for anyone who never watched the series. Somebody arriving cold can get three seasons of context in a comedy special and then watch the movie.

September 2 opens a run of releases.
VisionQuest premieres October 14, closing the WandaVision trilogy with Paul Bettany and James Spader.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians returns November 20 for its third season. Ahsoka Season 2 arrives January 20, with Hayden Christensen returning as Anakin Skywalker.
What LEGO Star Wars specials have looked like before
Lucasfilm and LEGO have a running arrangement, and the format is consistent.
Prior specials have included holiday and summer-themed entries, all built on the same premise of affectionate parody with the actual continuity left intact.
They tend to run short, land as family viewing, and slip in jokes aimed at whoever in the room has seen everything.
Two weeks out, then, and a fairly loaded Tuesday for anyone who has been waiting on the film.
