Netflix released “KPop Demon Hunters” to select theaters this weekend for a two-day sing-along event! It ended up performing better than expected and beat “Weapons” to hit number one.
It is estimated that the popular streaming hit will reach between $18-$20 million. That total puts it ahead of estimates, and “Weapons” at $15.6 million this weekend, making this Netflix’s first number one box office release.
**The box office estimates are based on third-party sources, as Netflix does not release numbers. **
Fandom returns to the theater
What I love about this event is the return of the fandom community to theaters. It’s the same feeling and vibe we used to have when a new “Star Wars,” “Spider-Man,” or other big fan movie was released. A feeling of community. The excitement within a fandom, where people are overjoyed by the experience, is what made fandom great!
I miss it.
Many cinemas participated in the sing-along event, including Cinemark, Regal, and Alamo Drafthouse. However, Cinemark even added dozens more shows to its schedule to accommodate demand.
Fans posted video clips and images of the event on social media platforms like X
Being in a sold out theater tonight, with a bunch of kids and tweens singing their hearts out, and every parent/adult in the audience (me included!) clapping along and cheering them on, was one of the most magical movie moments ever. This is what it all about. #KPOPDEMONHUNTERS pic.twitter.com/tMILJg9PWs

My favorite moment from the K-Pop Demon Hunters sing-a-long: when all the tiny dancers and singers at my theater started chanting “Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!” after “Free.” #KPOPDEMONHUNTERS pic.twitter.com/iQIGgVrpT0

The moment the lights came out, you would’ve thought it was Spider-Man: No Way Home. This crowd’s energy was INSANE tonight 😭
But this is why I love the theatrical experience and I love movies. Shit like this is special man. Cherish it. ❤️ #KPOPDEMONHUNTERS pic.twitter.com/7fiCt1BXCK

I’ve seen pictures and posts from the crowd, and it’s all different types of people, ages, genders, etc., all enjoying this film! I love that.
The people behind the film are so genuinely grateful. It is what a hit should be.
Netflix was smart to offer this and make it an “event” movie experience.
