KPop Demon Hunters Short Film Debut Rated by MPA, Release Likely Soon

Fans of Netflix’s hit animated musical KPop Demon Hunters may not have to wait until a full sequel to see more of Huntr/x, the demon-slaying K-pop group at the heart of the story. A new short film tied to the franchise has been rated by the Motion Picture Association, suggesting its release is soon.

Debut: A KPop Demon Hunters Story Gets Rated

The MPA recently listed a project titled Debut: A KPop Demon Hunters Story on its official ratings website. The short has been given a PG rating for “some action/violence and scary images.” The listing also identifies Sony as the distributor and classifies the project as a “short subject,” the MPA’s designation for short films rather than feature-length releases.

The title hints at a potential origin story, possibly showing the early days of Huntr/x—how the group’s members came together, discovered the threat of demons, and launched their K-pop careers. Though details remain under wraps, fans are already speculating that new music could accompany the release.

Part of Sony’s LENS Program

Back in 2023, Sony announced it would produce a short film based on KPop Demon Hunters through its LENS mentorship program, which supports emerging talent in animation. The program also produced The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, a short inspired by the Spider-Verse films.

Debut marks the first confirmed expansion of the KPop Demon Hunters franchise since the feature film’s runaway success. The original movie, produced by Sony Pictures Animation and released on Netflix in June 2025, quickly became one of the platform’s most-watched animated films, earning praise from both critics and fans.

Where Will It Stream?

It remains unclear whether Debut will stream on Netflix, like the original film, or whether Sony might make it available on platforms such as YouTube for wider accessibility. Given its short format and PG rating, the project seems designed to reach both existing fans and younger audiences who may just be discovering the franchise.
