Kingdom Hearts IV and Final Fantasy VII Revelation both release in 2027

Square Enix set its Remake trilogy finale for April 8 and has Sora’s next chapter coming late in the same year. One of those games is Disney’s, and it arrives on the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

Square Enix is putting both of its biggest games in the same calendar year, and Disney has a stake in one of them.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation arrives April 8, 2027, the company confirmed during PlayStation’s State of Play.

Kingdom Hearts IV follows in late 2027. Square Enix and Disney & Pixar Games announced that window at D23 on Aug. 15, alongside a trailer revealing the game’s Coco world.

What Square Enix announced about Kingdom Hearts IV at D23

The trailer did more than set a date.

Sora appears inside the world of Coco, singing alongside Miguel and Héctor. It is the first Disney world Square Enix has confirmed for the game.

Donald Duck and Goofy return, and players will be able to control Mickey Mouse, Donald and Goofy as they search for Sora after the events of Kingdom Hearts III.

The story picks up with Sora in Quadratum, the mysterious city where the Heartless are causing havoc.

Kingdom Hearts IV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Will Kingdom Hearts IV be delayed

Square Enix went out of its way to say no.

Series director Tetsuya Nomura and co-director Tai Yasue both addressed speculation that the game could slip into 2028. Yasue said development is fully on schedule and the team is confident in 2027. Nomura said a delay is not expected.

That is an unusually direct response for a studio that has historically let release windows drift without comment.

Much about the game is still hidden. Square Enix has not revealed the full list of Disney worlds, has not explained how the new playable characters fit the structure, and has kept the story direction largely under wraps.

Kingdom Hearts turns 25 in 2027

The anniversary probably explains some of the scheduling.

A D23 panel called DEEP DIVE into KINGDOM HEARTS commemorated 25 years of the franchise, which debuted in 2002 as a crossover between Disney worlds and Final Fantasy characters.

Square Enix also announced at D23 that a Kingdom Hearts anime series, working title, is in development for Disney Channel and Disney+, made in collaboration with Nomura and the Square Enix creative team.

Nomura has separately said Square Enix hired a dedicated loremaster to keep the franchise’s continuity cohesive, which anyone who has tried to explain the series to a newcomer will recognize as overdue.

What is in Final Fantasy VII Revelation

The other 2027 release closes a story Square Enix started seven years ago.

Revelation is the third and final entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, following Remake in 2020 and Rebirth in 2024. Cloud and the party race to stop Meteor as Sephiroth approaches godhood.

New footage shown Thursday featured the Highwind airship for open-world traversal and Piko, a Chocobo that grows alongside the party and learns new abilities.

Premium and Premium Plus editions include early access and a Story Expansion Pass with two DLCs, one focused on Sephiroth and one on Vincent and the Turks. Those are planned between winter 2027 and spring 2028.

Square Enix also announced a Trilogy Edition bundling all three games, with pre-orders live now.

Why April 8, 2027 matters

Final Fantasy VII Remake launched on April 10, 2020. Revelation arrives almost exactly seven years later.

The original Final Fantasy VII shipped in 1997, which makes 2027 its 30th anniversary.

So Square Enix is closing a trilogy on the source game’s 30th and launching Kingdom Hearts IV on that series’ 25th, in the same twelve months.

What this means for Disney

Kingdom Hearts remains an unusual arrangement in Disney’s portfolio.

Square Enix develops and publishes. Disney licenses its characters and worlds. Disney does not own the franchise, which is part of why an animated adaptation took more than two decades to happen.

Coco is having a considerable year regardless. Coco 2 arrives in theaters in November 2029 with Benjamin Bratt returning as Ernesto de la Cruz, and the first-ever Coco attraction is under construction at Disney California Adventure with no announced opening date.

Add the Kingdom Hearts IV world, and that is a game, a film, a ride, and a Halloween treat trail appearance, all for one 2017 movie.
