The 2012 Pixar film Brave is considered to be somewhat of a black sheep, not just in the history of Pixar movies but also in the lineup of Disney Princesses. While technically not Pixar’s first princess character, Merida was the first outside of Disney’s own animation division to be added to their official lineup.
The movie was released at a bit of an odd time for the studio, sandwiched between two big sequels, Cars 2 (2011) and Monster’s University (2013), and making less than both. Brave was also released just before Disney hit it big with Frozen the very next year, giving Disney’s feature-animated films a lot of momentum for the rest of that decade.
Some have forgotten the film or referred to it as ‘that one Pixar princess movie’. Even 2018’s Ralph Breaks the Internet poked fun at her Scottish accent as the other princesses said rather rudely, “She’s from that other studio.” However, one person who still looks fondly upon it is Merida herself, actress Kelly Macdonald.
Recently, when being interviewed by ScreenRant about her upcoming film The Radleys, Kelly Macdonald was asked about her potentially being involved with a possible Brave sequel or even a live-action remake of the movie. She stated:
“Oh, I wouldn’t get anywhere near a live-action remake, I’m far too old. But yeah, it was an amazing thing to be part of, and I’m one of a very short list of Disney Princesses, and that’s kind of cool. If my younger self had heard about that, I dunno what she’d have thought. But yeah, I dunno about sequels or anything, that hadn’t occurred to me.“
While it is true that Macdonald is too old to portray the teenage princess in any live-action project, there is a chance of her returning if a sequel is greenlit. She did reprise the role of Merida for there aforementioned Ralph Breaks the Internet, so she can most likely still pull off the voice. If there was a live-action remake, she would probably have a role cameo, much like Jodi Benson in the 2023 remake of The Little Mermaid.
While it is true that Disney has recently begun working on multiple sequels to already existing Disney Animation and Pixar films, it isn’t known if Brave is on that list. But it does have some potential if they were to lean more toward Celtic mythology, as the first film gave us only a few examples. Perhaps more fairies or even dragons? Who knows?
What do you think? Should Brave get a sequel? Or perhaps a Live-Action Remake like many ofter Disney Princess films? Let us know your thoughts.
