This past July, the very foundations of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were shaken as the first prominent face of the franchise, Robert Downy Jr., would be returning following the death of his character Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, in Avengers: Endgame. However, he would now be a villain instead of a hero, as he will be taking on the mantel of Doctor Doom in Avengers 5, now called Avengers: Doomsday.
The announcement shocked many. Not only would RDJ be returning, but the planned new “big bad,” Kang the Conquerer was being replaced despite already appearing in multiple MCU projects such as the Loki series and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
The future of the character in the MCU was actually called into question when the actor portraying him, Jonathan Majors, became involved with a legal battle over assault charges. He was found guilty but ended up serving no jail time for it. Many assumed that the role would be recast, as such things have happened before. But Marvel went in another direction, which Majors was not happy with.
But according to a new report via insider Daniel Richtman, aka DanielRPK, Majors’ legal issues weren’t the reason why Kang himself was dropped.
When responding to a comment on Twitter/X asking why Marvel didn’t just recast Kang instead of introducing Doctor Doom Richtman replied saying:
“The reason they decided to drop Kang wasn’t just because of Majors. When they were looking to recast the role they realized there wasn’t much hype around the character so they went with a gimmick casting of RDJ as Doom to get people excited for the Avengers film. To be fair I think it worked. The RDJ announcement is the most viewed video on Insta.“
Admittedly, Kang’s character wasn’t well-known to most of the public. While in the comics he was a major threat, the name “Doctor Doom” has been seen in multiple movies, cartoons, and video games. There is even a ride at Universal’s Island of Adventure park in Orlando called Doctor Doom’s Freefall, themed after the villain. He was seen as the safer bet for the studio despite it not making a lot of sense story-wise.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently set for a May 1st, 2026 release, setting up Avengers: Secret Wars, which will release on May 7th of the following year.
Are you excited for the conclusion to the Multiverse Saga?
Are you happy that Robert Downy Jr. is returning? Was it a good choice to replace Kang with Doom?
